Laughter, Humor and Pain Perception in Children: A Pilot Study

Presentation:

The laugh therapy is a study which shows how children resist stressful and painful procedures.

Background information:
Nowadays there are a lot of programs designs to bring humor into pediatrics hospitals. This study has been tested in children and teenagers, and it has shown that they can resist with no problems, this kind of stressful or painful procedures using humorous things. Also there are non-profit organizations designed to bring humor for healing. One of them is called RxLaughterTM in collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States of America and they are interested using humor to heal.
Purpose:

To find out how the laugh therapy reduces the pain, helping children to feel more comfortable in hospitals, giving them a better quality of life.
Methods:
To this study these organizations (already mentioned) used children as samples, aged between 7 and 16 years old. This group of children was composed by 12 boys and just 6 girls. Those children had to watch humorous and funny video tapes while they put their hands under cold water. People who tested this, recorded the children’s pain rating the severity. It means that before, during and after this study children were asked if they felt any pain. So they could see how much pain tolerance children had (submersion time). When they finished recording this, they examined this in a deeper way according to the mood indicator (number of laughs/smiles during each video, and the child behavior before the funny of the video).
Results:
According to the mood indicator, the results of this study showed that the group of children had a higher pain tolerance when they watched humorous videos during the test and they had a lower pain tolerance when they watched the videos before or after the cold water test.
Conclusion:
The results were positive because the humoristic distractions could help children and teenagers to tolerate the painful procedures and the stressful situations.
